This retaining wall is an important part of the Cauldon Plateway. The plateways are significant relics of industrial activity in the Churnet Valley which transported raw materials such as iron stone, coal and charcoal from the surrounding area down to the numerous industries in the Churnet Valley. The most significant plateways ran from Froghall to Cauldon Lowe limestone quarries dating from the 1770s onwards. The low retaining walls at Froghall have started to collapse and we have an opportunity to repair them, they are due to become scheduled ancient monuments.
