Himalayan Balsam Pulling

Event date:
Monday, 6 July, 2015 - 11:00 to Tuesday, 7 July, 2015 - 12:45
Venue:
YHA Dimmingsdale, Oakamoor, ST10 3AS
Event organiser:
Bill Piper
Event Description:

Come and help pull Himalayan Balsam in the beautiful surroundings of YHA Dimmingsdale. The event is part of the Himalayan Balsam BIG PULL, which is removing balsam from all around the Churnet Valley throughout the fortnight beginning June 27.  By car YHA Dimmingsdale is reached either from Oakamoor, Red Road, then left off Stoney Dale, or from Greensdale Lane off the B5417 then right off Stoney Dale. It can also be reached by foot from the Ramblers Retreat on Red Road. Be prepared for some nettles and brambles at the Dimmingsdale site. Wear long sleeves, long trousers and bring stout footwear. Gloves are recommended, though YHA can provide some of these. There are two sessions, so come for one or both. If staying for the afternoon session it will be a good idea to bring a packed lunch. Tea/coffee/biscuits provided. Also access to toilets and hand washing facilities. Balsam is safe to touch and pulls out easily from the ground. Controlling this highly invasive non-native weed helps our native wildflowers like bluebells and wood sorrel to flourish.
